A 2.5-ring bit is a milder version of a 3-ring (Pessoa) bit. This bit creates leverage: the lower the reins are placed, the stronger the effect becomes. It’s ideal for horses that get strong on course, grab the bit, or pull through the rider’s hands. Compared to a 2.5-ring eggbutt, the loose rings allow more movement in the mouthpiece and make the rider’s aids act in a more indirect way.
The double-jointed mouthpiece has two hinges, is shaped more to the mouth, and sits a bit looser. It works on the tongue, bars, and corners of the mouth. Be aware with narrow lower jaws, as the joints can press on the bars and cause soreness. Compared to a single-jointed bit, this one puts more pressure on the tongue. A double-jointed mouthpiece is a standard choice.
Sweet Iron bits are made of steel with a recognizable blue color. When exposed to moisture, Sweet Iron develops a surface rust that tastes sweet and naturally stimulates saliva production. This encourages the horse to chew and accept the bit. This oxidation process changes the bit’s color from blue to brown-gray.
