Vitamin E is one of the fat-soluble family of vitamins. It becomes incorporated into the membranes surrounding cells as well as those surrounding structures [organelles] within the cells. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that works together with selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase enzyme.

Vitamin E is a collective term that actually includes eight different compounds - four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. Products that contain all eight isoforms are usually called "full spectrum". All of these isoforms have activity in the plant kingdom but within our and the horse's body, the liver will filter out and excrete all but the alpha-tocopherol form.

Vitamine E may also exist in the "d" form -  d-alpha-tocopherol - also called RRR - or a d, l form where the "l" arises during the synthesis of the vitamin. The d form is called natural and the d,l is synthetic.  The d form is the most active.
