The Pelham combines the function of a snaffle and a curb. It can be used with one or two reins. When ridden with a single rein, a converter strap is needed to connect the bit rings and shanks. The Pelham works with leverage—longer shanks create a stronger effect. The Baby Pelham has shorter shanks, making it milder than a standard Pelham. Pelhams are often used for strong horses, horses with limited mouth space, or as a step toward introducing a double bridle. Not recommended for inexperienced riders.

 

The French Link mouthpiece is double-jointed with a flat center plate that applies even pressure across the tongue. It lies a bit looser in the mouth and shapes more naturally than a single-jointed mouthpiece. Sweet Iron bits are made of steel with a recognizable blue finish. Exposure to moisture creates a light rust with a sweet taste that encourages salivation, improving comfort and bit acceptance. Over time, the blue color changes to brownish gray.
